How a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) Can Be a Game Changer for Your Community College

During the first five years as a development officer at my community college, I learned about the CFRE credential and was envious of my US counterparts who held this prestigious title. I
researched the requirements and traveled to another city for the two day survey course before taking the exam. I didn’t want any distractions. My head was filled with information and I was prepared for any version of the test I would be given.Mine was heavily weighted with planned giving questions. Then I nervously waited for the mail. YES! I passed with a great score. Since that year, I re-certify every three years. Recertification also requires specific and proven examples of successful fundraising accomplishments. I keep a file with important evidence of what I might use throughout the three year period toward my next recertification. For 22 years I have been proud to put the “CFRE” behind my name.

How Can a CFRE Help Your Fundraising Efforts

Along with my certificate was the letter of congratulations and the following;

“Your commitment to the profession of fundraising, continued professional development, and volunteer service exemplifies what it means to be a true fundraising professional in the philanthropic sector.

Your decision to support the advancement of philanthropy through your participation in the Certified Fund Raising Executive program also connects you to the thousands of committed fundraisers in all corners of the world holding the CFRE designation. We encourage you to share the pride and achievement of professional certification with your fundraising colleagues.”

CFRE International is an independent organization dedicated to the certification of fundraising executives by setting standards in philanthropic practice. Governed by a volunteer Board of directors and led by a small professional staff, CFRE International consistently meets the highest standards for certification excellence and is itself accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies. As the premier global credential for career fundraisers, the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is endorsed and supported by 22 of the world’s leading professional and philanthropic associations.

Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards set by CFRE International which include tenure in the profession, education, has demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service to not-for-profit organizations. They have also passed a rigorous written examination testing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive. Furthermore, they are obligated to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.

Employers and donors who work with CFRE’s know they are getting a professional who is committed to the best outcomes for their organization and has the requisite knowledge and skills.
